The Church calls people to the responsible stewardship of their time and talent in support of the Church. This often takes the form of volunteering for a specific lay ministry, most of which are liturgical, catechetical, or involved in pastoral care and social justice.
Liturgical lay ministries include lectors, commentators, altar servers, cantors and music ministers who lead the congregation in singing.
Ministers of Holy Communion assist the pastor in distributing communion during Mass. They can also take Holy Communion to the sick and housebound.
Ushers or ministers of hospitality welcome the people and direct the seating or processions of the assembly as needed.
Catechetical lay ministries can include Sunday school teachers, RCIA leaders, and youth group leaders.
The list re-involvement in lay ministries may also include those who work with charitable activities, pastoral care, outreach, or advocacy for social justice.
